The dark realms beneath the surface conceal an immeasurable wealth of wondrous riches and terrifying mysteries awaiting discovery by those daring enough to venture into these lightless kingdoms. From dense veins of precious metals and mesmerizing, luminescent crystals to unknown and seemingly alien species of plants and animals, the deep places of the earth support a diverse and often bizarre ecosystem utterly foreign to most surface dwellers. Yet, tales of the subterranean world’s magnificent treasures tantalize brave adventurers seeking to wrest them from the clutches of the wicked beasts and monstrous denizens that call this forsaken land home.

Into the Black prepares players and GMs alike for the perilous quest into this inhospitable territory, arming players with the tools necessary not only to survive in this treacherous domain but prosper. Potent new substances, magic items, equipment and material await underground explorers, while a full arsenal of innovative spells aids them in their quest. Likewise, Into the Black gives GMs a diverse spectrum of potent monsters from the insidious and cerebral pallemon to the sly and crafty barathelar as well as campaign ideas and a complete background on each of the four subterranean environments: caverns, catacombs, mines and sewers.

Requires the use of the Dungeons & Dragons® Player’s Handbook, published by Wizards of the Coast, Inc. This product utilizes updated material from the v.3.5 revision.

What the Reviewers Say...

"As a follow up to Into the Green, this book brings more depth to the Underdark settings available for any world. The clear and concise way the underground areas are divvied up and then broken done into animal, vegetable and mineral components as well as environmental hazards makes it easy for a DM to better flavor a campaign." Read the review by Bruce Boughner at the d20 Magazine Rack

"I highly recommend this book to any DM who wants to return to the dark days of yester-year when a dwarf with an axe and an innate sense of direction could lead his companions to the monster's lair. Of course, now he'll have to deal with a bad case of crack-foot and watch out for hemorrhagic fever while searching earnestly for that vein of bergasalt -the most lethal substance against undead that is known! Let's go caving! Read the Review in Issue #15 of Fictional Reality

"Overall, Into the Black sets out to be a different sourcebook on the adventures below ground. It succeeds in getting this across, but may push some gamers to the side with the heavy weight of high-brow language. It’s a nice change of pace from the lurking drow warriors and mind flayers, from the burrowing purple worms and goblins, and even the warrens of wererats. 7 out of 10." Here's a brief look into some of the artwork that appears within the pages of Into the Black.

Illustrated by Marcio Fiorito

A cluster of phosphorescent gems illuminates a cave with numerous stalagmites and stalactites where four one-foot tall plants with dull green stems supporting dense, oversized leaves bask in the radiant light emitted by the glowing stones.

Illustrated by Brannon Hall

An arrow sticks halfway out of an armored warrior’s chest as the soldier wears an obvious expression of disbelief. An elf archer standing several feet away nocks another arrow into his bow. The arrow’s yellowish, multifaceted tip glistens in the sunlight.

Illustrated by Jesse Mohn

A contingent of ten skeletons armed with swords rushes at a party of adventurers. The rogue lights a small, metallic canister that he hurls toward the onrushing enemies. Meanwhile, the wizard pops a white mushroom into his mouth as he readies a wand for the charging horde. The fighter on the other hand coats the head of his mace with a liquid contained in a flask as he looks up at the rapidly closing foes.

Illustrated by Danilo Moretti

A disheveled human wearing a battered miner’s hat with a concave lens affixed to the brim cautiously watches as a pair of miners wander toward it. Wisps of gray and brown hair teeming with caked deposits of dirt and grime peek out from beneath the hat. It wears a torn and tattered miner’s outfit containing numerous pockets filled with various gems, metals and minerals. It constantly twirls and spins a heavy pick in its hands. The creature appears ready to speak revealing a mouth full of yellowing, rotting teeth.

Illustrated by Ed Bourelle

A young dwarf smashing the mine’s wall with his pick reveals a multifaceted, slightly luminescent indigo gem found embedded in a chunk of iron. The bewildered young dwarf looks over his shoulder, where a seasoned dwarf miner wears an expression of awe and disbelief. The older dwarf’s chisel falls out of his hand and onto the floor.

Illustrated by Marcio Fiorito

In a wizard’s laboratory within a natural cavern, a thin, middle aged human in a dull black robe is holding a weathered tome as he beams a sinister smile at a completed stone construct. Numerous chunks of rock chiseled from the golem lay strewn about the floor.

Illustrated by Brannon Hall

Three adventurers traveling through the sewers look on as another member of the group strikes a piece of flint resulting in a spark and a rapidly expanding ball of flame. The three adventurers are obviously admonishing their associate not to ignite the flame while their friend seems bewildered by their passionate pleas.

Illustrated by Jesse Mohn

Light penetrates through a sewer grate, shedding illumination on a three-foot high mushroom with a four-foot diameter cap. The mottled brown mushroom is affixed to the bottom of tunnel coated with a thin layer of brackish water.

Illustrated by Danilo Moretti

Two 7-foot tall, gaunt, albino humanoids with bloated, pulsating craniums and long, spindly arms and legs have their hands over the heads of two dumb struck human warriors who seem powerless to resist the creatures. An ignorant expression is visible on the humans’ faces. Thin flaps of white skin cover the creatures’ vestigial eye sockets, while their nose is nothing more than a tiny indention with two nostrils. Their small, rounded mouth contains a long, prehensile ivory tongue and no teeth. Large horn shaped ears dominate their faces, and thousands of tiny cilia cover their hands, feet and face. The creatures wear earth-colored tunics and a third member of the inhuman group carries a strange sphere that clearly occupies all of his attention.
